Platform beds depart from the traditional bed by removing the dated boxspring and metal bed frame from the equation. Instead a foundation usually made of wood, supports the mattress and creates a cleaner more impressive look. In most cases, platform beds tend to be closer to the ground and hence are termed as low profile beds.
Futon platform beds take the concept one step further by replacing a traditional mattress with a futon mattress. Because most platform beds use slats to support the mattress, this is often the ideal combination. In many
cases, a platform bed will have a solid surface or tatami support system as shown at the French website www.omote.fr on the left.
This style of platform bed is more traditional to the Asian sphere, but is quickly becoming more popular around the world. These tend to make very firm beds, although the mattress can vary changing the consistency as well.
For those who are looking for something a bit more modern, their are many new forms to choose from. In Australia, for example the website Zentai Living showcases the Lumis on their home page. The Lumis bed frame is an upscale looking, maple colored platform that is as visually
pleasing as it is inviting.
Designs like this continue to pour onto the market and each year, the futon platform bed industry sees many more designs and manufacturers joining the excitement. It is hard to imagine the futon concept has taken this long to invade the bedroom in such a strong way.
Zenai Futon Living is really worth visiting. They have many platform beds that are exciting and closer to art than furniture.
Another great website from Brazil called Futon Brasil showcases some really ultra sleek designs. The Cama U, for example, introduces a futon mattress casing with stripes that adds real power to the over all look of the bed design.
In the pursuit of the unusual and eccentric, Futon Brasil is a stop no great dreamer should miss. Next time you are in Brazil, make sure you stop by their store.
Some companies have figured out how to introduce style for the budget minded. Long accepted as entry level furniture material, pine wood is
nonetheless easy to work with and with the right touch, one can create very smart looking furniture designs.
This is a lesson taught well by this Denmark company showing off their Susanoh platform bed which rises just inches from the floor. The Susanoh easily competes for style points with some of the thousand dollar platform beds from around the world, without breaking into a major budget. For a great looking platform bed, stop by Denmark’s Nippon Futon shop the next time you visit.
