Last time I discussed the standard futon mattress sizes that are available on Futon Planet in Futon Mattress Sizes - Part 1: Standard Sizes. In this edition, I will explain some of the more complicated futon mattresses that are available and their uses.
Loveseat and Chair size futon frames usually are the same width of a full size or a twin size futon mattress. Where a typical bi-fold futon frame and futon mattresses is longer than then it is deep. Customers enjoy loveseat and chair size futon frames since the take up less space width-wise, yet still offer the same sleeping area when as a bed. Many times customers enjoy having a loveseat of chair size futon frame to match their full size futon frame.
A loveseat futon frame and futon mattress uses the width for the seating area, and an ottoman either pulls out or folds out from underneath to create a full or twin size sleeping area.
Since there is an ottoman that pulls or folds out, your complete futon mattress will have extra material. There are few ways around this problem.
Cascading Loveseat Futon Mattress
If your full size or twin size futon mattress is thin enough it can fold over length wise. If this is true, you can have the futon mattress cascade over the top of the back deck of your futon frame. You may also have your futon mattress fold under for a little extra support when sitting.
Not all futon owners enjoy this way of creating the sofa position.
Split Futon Mattress
If you are looking for an alternate solution for a cascading loveseat futon mattress, than a split futon mattress is the way to go. Split mattresses take either a full size futon mattress or a twin size futon mattress and splits into two separate mattresses. This type of futon mattress is a little more complicated, can be rather confusing, and usually costs a little more.
Full Loveseat: 54 inches long by 54 inches wide
Full Ottoman: 21 inches long by 54 inches wide
Twin Loveseat: 54 inches long by 39 inches wide
Twin Ottoman: 21 inches long by 39 inches wide
Chair Size Sofa: 54 inches long by 28 inches wide
Chair Size Ottoman: 21 inches long by 28 inches wide
A split futon mattress has two mattress. One is for the sofa position where you would sit. There other is shorter, but the same width. You would be these together to create a full length futon mattress for a guest to sleep on.
When in the sofa position, you would only use the loveseat portion and store away the ottoman portion. If you are interested in getting a futon cover, you can either get one complete futon cover, or you can purchase a loveseat size futon cover and a ottoman size futon cover. Some customers feel that they can get by with just the loveseat size futon cover; then use a sheet to hold both the loveseat and ottoman futon mattresses together when guests are sleeping over.
Loveseat and Chair size futon frames and futon mattresses are a little trickier. If my blog didn’t offer the perfect visual, we have a few videos on loveseat and chair size futon operation to make it easier on you.
