The Look and Appeal of Platform Beds

Futon Planet features one of the largest online selections of futon frames, mattresses, and covers available. However, we also offer more than just futons.

Traditional Platform Bed Style

Over a dozen platform beds are featured in a variety of designs, styles, and wood finishes. Many of the platform beds available are from the same celebrated futon manufacturers that we offer.

Originally, platform beds were popular in the Europe and within the past several years, have become increasingly popular in America. They are closer to the ground which makes it easier to get out of bed and stays cooler through the night.

While a standard metal frame and box frame can look plain and ordinary, platform beds offer a whole new look to where you sleep. There are many different headboard and leg styles available, allowing you to create a whole new look and tone for your bedroom. Many platform beds feature matching furniture from the same manufacturer, so you can have a complete bedroom set to enjoy each day and night.

Generally, platform beds feature slats and cross beams to offer enough support so that an additional box spring is not necessary. This allows you to purchase either a futon mattress or even a standard mattress that snugly fits into the platform bed frame.

Modern and Contemporary Platform Beds

Platform beds, just like futons, are available in a variety of styles and designs to fit a broad range of tastes. Many platform beds offer traditional designs, while some manufacturers offer more modern and contemporary styles.

Many of the platform bed manufacturers we offer include Lifestyle Solutions, Night And Day, KD Frames, and Collegiate Furnishings. Several of these manufacturers also have optional matching drawers available, allowing you to store items underneath the platform bed for easy access and a completed, polished look.

Platform beds provide a whole new look and appeal that standard beds and futons do not offer. Visit Futon Planet’s platform bed category and enjoy the wide selection of styles and wood finishes available.

Bifold Frame Operation

It can be difficult to visually see how things work when shopping online. One of our most popular futons frames, the Bifold Futon Frame is one of the easiest to convert and operate. It even features several lounge positions, making it very popular with the college-age crowd.

Futon Planet has a great video that shows how the Bifold futon works, and how easy it is to operate.

This video also gives a good visual on the wheels that come with this frame, something many Futon Planet customers do realize until they receive and assemble the frame.

The Zen of Futon Maintainence

Just like a car, futon frames need routine maintenance. I’ve had customers ask me many times for a futon that will last forever. But the secret is just maintaining your investment on a regular basis and it could last decades.

First, keep the allen key and/or wrench that came with your futon taped underneath your frame. This allows you to have easy access to your tools and you’ll never wonder where they are.

Wiggle your frame just a little bit. Is it moving more than it should? Is it off balance? Check all bolts and assembly points to see if anything looks odd.

Use your allen key on each bolt, even if you cannot tighten it anymore. Checking on a regular basis can help find issues before it is too late.

Operate the futon a few times, check to see if anything is misaligned, too tight, or converting improperly. Do you hear squeaking? Try to find where that squeaking is and apply a little WD40 to that contact. Properly lubricating moving parts is important in preventing damages.

If you have a wood futon frame, consider giving your futon a nice coat of wood polish to keep the finish and furniture looking great. Adding a polish to a wood futon frame will keep the wood from drying out and cracking, while preserving the unique finish of your frame.

Now after checking the frame, it is time to flip and rotate your futon mattress. Doing so on a regular basis can prolong the life of your mattress. This is especially true with futons that have cotton and polyester batting. These materials tend to move, lump up, and compress over time. By flipping your mattress, you can spread the wear throughout both sides of your mattress and may increase the longevity and comfort of your futon mattress.
