This past weekend I had visited my grandparents and stayed over for the night. They still have a thirty-plus year-old sofa bed that I remember sleeping on as a child, and was certainly not looking forward to sleeping on as a full-grown adult. The sofa’s cushions have continued to look great and provide support when sitting, but the mattress is so thin that you could feel the metal materials beneath.
My grandparents called it a night after the excitement of the 2nd round of the US Open, especially when Tiger Woods come back from several strokes down with an injured knee. Instead of expanding the sofa bed, I simply removed the pillows that served as back support and slept right on the cushions. Crisis adverted.
It seems I’m not the only one who dreads the common sofa bed. There is even a Sofa Free Flickr group where you can find many amateur and artistic photos of free or abandoned sofas and sofa beds simply lying around random places. I’ve found comments from some who were not able to give away their sofa beds for free.
My has furniture come a long way. Futons have saved the day when it comes to tight spaces and attractive furniture. With hundreds of designs and several varieties of styles available, futons have recreated the way people look at their furniture.
